Commencement of Operation of Yangon Branch

TOKYO, April 2, 2015 --- Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC, President and CEO: Takeshi Kunibe) received today Foreign Bank License from The Central Bank of Myanmar,  one of the first foreign banks to do so.

SMBC will open Yangon Branch and commence banking operations in Myanmar on 23rd April 2015.

The growth of Myanmar economy is expected to accelerate with increase in direct foreign investment, such as in the development of Thilawa Special Economic Zone. We have been supporting our clients in Myanmar through a representative office that was established in 1996. With the opening of Yangon Branch, we will be able to better meet the diverse needs of clients expanding their business in the country by providing financial services in collaboration with our local partner bank, Kanbawza Bank, the biggest local private bank in Myanmar.
